Although cognitive impairment is a common comorbid condition among patients with heart failure, its true prevalence is unknown. To address shortcomings of prior studies, in this study, we will estimate the prevalence of cognitive impairment among patients hospitalized with incident HF in REGARDS, a large, racially diverse prospective cohort.  In addition, we will characterize patterns (domains) of cognitive impairment using the cognitive battery in REGARDS. Finally, we will determine which demographic and clinical risk factors are independently associated with cognitive impairment across several domains. A better understanding of the prevalence and predictors of cognitive impairment will allow us to identify vulnerable patients prior to hospital discharge and ultimately develop interventions to address modifiable risk factors.
