The Patient Activated Learning System (PALS) is a joint effort by Weill Cornell Medicine and the University of Alabama at Birmingham to create an innovative health information platform that incorporates elements of adult learning theory, edutainment, and Bartle’s taxonomy of online gaming interactions. This initiative is led by the Division of General Internal Medicine and is beginning with hypertension content, and will eventually expand to include the breadth of health related information. Numerous studies are being conducted using this platform, including the enhanced usual care arm of the Southeastern Collaboration to Improve Blood Pressure Control, a small randomized study of WCM primary care patients, and a discharge planning intervention.
